So how did you learn Surface Pattern Design?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a creative mind… I’ve used paints, sewing, drawing and so much more - and loved the creative process. I’d often seen and admired gorgeous patterns, beautiful designs on fabrics, clothing and accessories - but never KNEW what the terminology was for the design process.

Like every good social media user, I’m always following along with brands that appeal to me - so when we popped our little one into cloth nappies in 2020, I started following Bare + Boho, and one of the designers behind the pieces, Cass Deller. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that my new career would come from a chance Instagram post!

Cass shared her first Surface Pattern Design Course in 2021, and it couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. I could set my own pace, or follow along with the class - and the best part?

It made me realise there IS space in the world for my art. Cass is incredibly passionate about realising your limiting beliefs - what’s holding you back from creating the life you want and deserve.

Surface Design is about taking YOUR ART, turning it into digital works, and licensing it. Did you know you can sell a pattern multiple times across different categories? That’s right - your creative work does the WORK FOR YOU. One design might license for $300 in one category (say Childrens wear) - but can still be available for license across different categories like stationery or homewares! The idea of earning money from your existing artwork is a game-changer.

Initially, I was a little scared to put my money where my heart was, and make the leap into Surface Design - but to say it’s been an investment is an understatement.

To date, I’ve partnered with so many wonderful brands, many of them female-founded, and bush businesses to boot.

If you haven’t heard of Cass, you would have almost certainly seen her work in retail stores, and online. She’s partnered with and created beautiful patterns for Bare and Boho, The Iconic, Pillow Talk, The Dairy, Palm Noosa and Cotton on Body. She’s also been featured in Real Living, Home Beautiful - and the Sunshine Coast is peppered with murals and beautiful pieces of hers.

Below are just a sample of how the Surface Pattern Design Course plays out - there’s one live round per year, and an Evergreen course which can be taken any time of year.

Already, my prints are living all over the world - from Sweden to Sydney, and from Blackall to Britain… Knowing my art is bringing joy to others in their homes and lives is such a wonderful feeling!

So - are you an artist? A sketcher? A painter? There IS a place in the world for your art. I knew I wanted to do something MORE with my works - but had no idea how to make it happen. Taking Cass’ course opened my eyes to the possibilities, and my investment has come back to me in spades. Pop over to my Pattern Library for a little squizz at my work, or head to Instagram to see how it all comes together. For a cheeky little discount, you can pop in code PIPPY10 to help you along!

And don’t worry - if you’re not familiar with Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator - Cass has a solution for that as well, with an Adobe PS and AI for Beginners Course
