So what IS surface design?

So the long and the short of it is -- surface designs are the print or pattern that cover any object. Artwork that really stands out, or fits in well with an established or emerging brand or idea. A surface design can be applied to clothing, accessories, homewares (think lampshades or bedspreads), wallpaper, curtains, stationery, gift wrap… the list goes on! They're an investment in your product that every single customer (and prospective customer) will see. And surface designs are important. They can give a feel for a business - whether they're more simplified tones, or more flamboyant, vibrant works. It can set the tone.

Some businesses have designers on their staff, but many choose to license surface pattern designs from independent artists. Sometimes the artist is credited with the design and artworks, and sometimes they're not. It's all in the nitty gritty of licensing that these bits and pieces are worked out. And while some pieces in my Pattern Library have been licensed already - there are other works that will never appear there - because they've been commissioned bespoke pieces, made specifically for a business's needs. I've worked with brands that produce womens and kids apparel and accessories, stationery, as well as my own in-house brand which features Australian-made table linen, greeting cards, fine art prints and more - all using my watercolour designs.

At Darling Creative I’ve worked with mostly female-founded Australian businesses, and quite a few of them have been bush businesses. It makes me so happy to know my artwork is being shared in so many different situations around the country. Ethical and sustainable manufacturing is really important to me as well - and I prefer (as much as I can), to work with businesses that align with those values.
I’m beyond excited that new products will very shortly hit the shelves of a reputable Brisbane kids and family-focused company... but until then the secret stays with me! But my little feet are tapping with excitement about seeing Darling Creative designs on more beautiful pieces.
If you'd like to find out more about licensing opportunities - or about custom works, I'd love to be in touch with you. Pattern Library access is free with a simple sign up using this form.
